Honey If You're Lucky
04:11
|
|||
honey if you're lucky we won't have to say goodbye
we'll just fade away to nothing as the years go rolling by
and all that digging memories of me out of your mind
honey if you're lucky you won't even have to try
honey if you're lucky you won't let me take you home
in the morning light i might be ugly like you've never known
and your own reflection in the bathroom might not come so clear
honey if you're lucky you won't have to break that mirror
something so sweet can turn
oil separates
honey if you're lucky
liquor if you ain't
honey if you're lucky i'll catch you when you fall
i'll figure out this knot and free my hands once and for all
here i'll come running when you're tumbling off that wall
honey if you're lucky you won't even have to call
something so sweet can turn
oil separates
honey if you're lucky
liquor if you ain't

it was the hottest day on record
when the mann gulch went alight
the call went out and wagner dodge
and fourteen men took flight
they flew down to the far side of the river
dodge said boys it's all right
every man's gotta face a fire sooner or later
every man's gotta learn to fight
dodge thought that the river bed
would keep the flames at bay
he never guessed the wind would change
and carry the embers their way
but like a devil dancing the fire jumped
and landed on the other side
and wagner dodge and fourteen men
started running for their lives
don't you run like hell boys
stop and turn around
that fire's loud as heaven
and the flames are bearing down
mama said don't play with matches
you might burn up where you stand
but sometimes you gotta fight the fire you can't control
with the one you can
a two storey high inferno
moving like a train
all dodge and his boys could do
was run and pray for rain
but the only intervention coming
that day was the sound
of whatever told wagner dodge
the stop and hold his ground
he lit a match and burned away
the grass around his feet
he wet a rag and held it
on his mouth so he could breathe
then he lay down in those cinders
that were smoldering on the ground
and like the hell the mann gulch fire
came roaring all around
don't you run like hell boys
stop and turn around
that fire's loud as heaven
and the flames are bearing down
mama said don't play with matches
you might burn up where you stand
but sometimes you gotta fight the fire you can't control
with the one you can
at thirty miles an hour
and two thousand degrees
the fire torched the grass
and seared the bark off all the trees
and thirteen unlucky men
burned alive that day
but from the ashes wagner dodge
got up and walked away
they asked dodge how he knew
his plan would work so well
he told them that he didn't
that he was scared as hell
but a fire's only as strong
as what you feed it to survive
burn it all you're left with nothing
but you might get out alive
so i'm sorry babe
i know i've been a coward and a liar
and i'm guessing it was probably me
who first started that fire
but if we keep on running now
we'll surely end up dead
so strike a match
and let's lay down here in these flames instead
don't you run like hell boys
stop and turn around
that fire's loud as heaven
and the flames are bearing down
mama said don't play with matches
you might burn up where you stand
but sometimes you gotta fight the fire you can't control
with the one you can

Halo
03:26
|
|||
it's cold and i'm tired
i need logs for the fire
but the wood whispers
don't get too close
it's too late my dear
i have hope in my ear
if you won't catch
i'll burn for us both
unwritten lines
with words underlined
like the light
from a crack in the door
are all i can say
to keep your halo of clay
from shattering here on the floor
authors and seekers
and rockers in sneakers
compete for the blue of your eye
i don't want your time
just a place in your mind
where you wander without knowing why
unwritten lines
with words underlined
like the light
from a crack in the door
are all i can say
to keep your halo of clay
from shattering here on the floor

Disappearing Woman
04:19
|
|||
dear disappearing woman
dancing in a basement with me
goodbye blacklight smile
goodbye bride to be
we heard the sea at midnight
tasted each other's breath
stopped shy of winter
the belts against our chests
but you don't see me
and i don't see you
just a reflection of me
asking do you love
i do
dear disappearing woman
dancing in a church with me
goodbye holy water
goodbye mercury
we heard the hallelujah
swallowed each other's names
the hold is still familiar
the steps are all the same
but you don't see me
and i don't see you
just a reflection of me
asking do you love
i do

Make Me Move
03:59
|
|||
laura my apartment
is stacked to the ceiling
with stuff i've collected
for years
i can't fit it all
in the closets or the cabinets
or the crawlspace between
my ears
come turn me out
make me move
take me in
and i know there's not enough
room behind your eyes
so i'm cutting myself down
to size
laura all your records
self portraits books and margin notes
you stayed up scratching
all night
high on your shelf
some off balance others out of reach
but point me to the ones you think
i'd like
i'll turn you out
make you move
take you in
and you know there's not enough
room behind my eyes
so you're cutting yourself down
to size
laura our apartment
is stacked to the ceiling
with stuff that we never
threw away
we keep in separate closets
crawl inside to lie for hours alone
you guard my door i'll guard your door
all day
put me out
make me move
shut me in
and we know there's not enough
room behind our eyes
so we cut each other down
to size

Little Faith
02:52
|
|||
i know the fear
in the fear that you're feeling
believe me
i know
you know the feeling
the feeling of knowing
i believe you
you know
i feel relief in
the swell of your breathing
believe me
i know
you feel receding
in a breath you'll be leaving
i believe you
you know
but you don't have to go
i know it's clearing
the hum in my hearing
believe me
i know
you know the reeling
of real unraveling
i believe you
you know
i feel a healing
believe in believing
believe me
you'll see
you feel a bleeding
our holy wounds widening
i believe you
you'll see
but have a little faith in me

Love Letters
04:38
|
|||
love letters are hard to read
especially when love letters
are what you want to need
some tender writers
really just love letters
and some sincere senders
just need better editors
hearts made of paper
fold easily
so love letters are hard to read
love songs are hard to hear
especially when love songs
are not what they appear
dissonance and feedback
and loud distorted walls
spaces in the melody
that have no words at all
the shape of your heart
can depend on the shape of your ear
so love songs are hard to hear
and it's hard getting through
when i'm close to you
it's harder
but it's easier too

Story Song
07:45
|
|||
i have a friend who can't closely describe her own heart
she hems and she haws and she's mostly in throes fits and starts
she feels the sun burn like a furnace the base of her hair
but tongue tied she can't but point shadows to tell you it's there
so tell me a story with chemical words
with causes and outcomes and symptoms and cures
or just sing it in syllables
serenade sweet easy rhymes
ease me for weeks at a time
tell it to me again
tell it to me again
tell me won't you tell me
tell me my name
i have a friend who says learning will set his soul free
so he checked out every book in the library
then six decades later said i'm ready to make up my mind
but by then he'd forgotten half all what he's read then he died
so tell me a story of god's only son
with verses that i can inscribe on my gun
because evil is something
that someone else has that i don't
recite it enough and i won't
tell it to me again
tell it to me again
tell me won't you tell me
tell me my name
i have a friend who's an expert at intimate lies
he tells me the secret to love is to close all the time
he says action is faith and faith is my voice in your ear
and he just bought a house with commissions he brought in last yea
so tell me a story where i'm not afraid
and i'll give you my money
and you can persuade yourself
that you deserve every dime
that these fools throw your way
sell the last trace of yourself away
tell it to me again
tell it to me again
tell it to me again
tell me won't you tell me
tell me my name
